Third Party Insurance
The attraction of third party insurance is that it is significantly cheaper than comprehensive insurance. However, it is important to understand exactly what third party insurance represents. If you take out only third party insurance you are basically saying that you place no value on your car or your life. The third party insurance does not cover any damage to your car or yourself. It is solely there to protect other people and their property. It will only cover your liability to other people, although some third party insurance may cover the cost of legal fees. Also, some third party only policies may cover you to drive other cars on a third party basis. However, this is by no means across the board so always check your policy or with your insurer.
Third Party Fire and Theft Insurance
The next level up, is third party, fire and theft cover. As the name suggests this is third party cover with the addition of cover in the event of theft or fire. The policy will provide compensation according to the value of the car or cover the cost of repairs in the event of fire or after a stolen car has been recovered, should the car be repairable. Again, you are not protecting your car or yourself against accidents that are your fault. This may be fine for the car if it is of little significant value, but you should ask yourself if it is worth the risk of injury to yourself.
As you can probably tell we feel there must be an excellent reason for taking out third party insurance instead of comprehensive insurance.
Full Comprehensive Insurance
Fully comprehensive (or "fully comp" as it is known) insurance as the name suggests is the most comprehensive form of car insurance. It is more expensive than third party, fire and theft, but includes cover for the policyholder and their vehicle. It is important to remember that fully comprehensive insurance does not mean complete cover. There will be some exclusions in all policies. However, apart from the agreed exclusions all damage to your car be covered and the policyholder will be able to claim on their policy should they so desire.
No Claims Bonus
Basically, a no claims bonus is precisely that – a bonus for not making any claims. Those people unfamiliar with car insurance policies will probably be aware of the no claims bonus and will broadly have a good idea of what it is. However, there are some subtleties that the uninitiated may not be aware of. The bonus is applied either at the start of a policy and then at every renewal date. The bonus can go up and down depending on what has happened in that year.
